Mary E. Milton
1915-2010 ARLINGTON Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Milton, 94, a resident of Prouty Hill Road in Arlington, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
Born on Long Island, N.Y., Aug. 16, 1915, daughter of Frederick A. and Mary Elizabeth Proctor Elliott, Betty lived in Mount Vernon, N.Y. as a child.
After her marriage to James Milton, who predeceased her on Mar. 10, 1993, she resided in Katonah, N.Y. In earlier years Betty had been employed by the American Banknote Company in New York and later worked briefly at the Patent Trader Newspaper in Mount Kisco, N.Y. Upon her husbands retirement, they purchased and ran Milton's Stationery for 18 years. In 1983 the Milton's sold their store and relocated to Sunderland, VT.
For several years Betty was the organist at Saint Mary's Church in Katonah, where she was a member and Past President of the Altar Rosary Society. She co-chaired and later was chairman of the Mothers March of Dimes in Katonah. After moving to Sunderland Betty became a member of the Sodality at Saint Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington where for many years she arranged flowers on the Altar and Sanctuary; many of the flowers came from Betty's garden at home. She was also a member of the Arlington Garden Club.
She leaves a son, James E. Milton Jr., of Sunderland; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Gallagher of Italy, and Jeanne A. Thomas and her husband, John, of Fairbanks, Alaska; Four grandchildren, Parrish Mergenthaler, Deborah Mergenthaler-Silack, Richard Gallagher and Sharon Gallagher; Three great-grandchildren, James Silack, Alexandra Silack and Patrick Gallagher.
She was predeceased by a brother, Frederick A. Elliott Jr., a grandson, Michael Gallagher, and a granddaughter, M. Frances Gallagher.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from THE MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, with a prayer at 9 a.m. and then from Saint Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Saint Columbans Cemetery in Arlington.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
