Mary Fusco-King Obituary
Mary Josephine Fusco-King

1935 - 2014 WEST RUTLAND Mary Josephine Fusco-King, 78, of West Rutland, passed away in her home of more than 30 years this past Thursday, June 26. Mary Jo battled cancer for more than 15 years and more recently, she suffered from Alzheimer's. Mary Jo was born at her family home on Killington Avenue in Rutland to Anthony R. Fusco and Mary Catherine (Clarino) Fusco on Sept. 5, 1935. She attended both Christ the King and Mount Saint Joseph and graduated in 1954. After graduation, Mary Jo married her high school sweetheart, Wayne L. King, in January 1956. Shortly after marrying Wayne, the couple moved to North Carolina, where Mary gave birth to twins Katherine and Kathleen. After returning to Vermont to raise their family in Bennington, Mary Jo and Wayne welcomed another daughter, Karen, and son, Wayne II. The family moved to West Rutland in 1979. Mary Jo spent most of her life working at local schools in both Bennington and West Rutland. Although she worked as a secretary, Mary Jo found herself back to her roots by cooking and baking for the students of those schools. Even in the summer, she worked in the kitchen at Camp Keewaydin on Lake Dunmore. After her retirement and the death of her husband, Mary Jo became a foster grandparent and worked at West Rutland School. She was a foster Grammy until December 2013. When her children were young, Mary Jo was a Girl Scout troop leader. While living in Bennington, she was also involved with the Saint Anne's Society. She was a member of both the American-Sicilian Society and Italian Aid Society in Rutland. Proud of her Italian heritage, Mary Jo eagerly awaited the Clarino family reunion the second weekend of July each year. Mary Jo spent many summers camping with her husband, children, and grandchildren at The Waterhouses on Lake Dunmore as well as vacationing in York Beach and Wells, Maine. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed many feline companions over the years, along with sewing, gardening, crocheting, embroidering and of course, baking and cooking. Mary Jo was predeceased by her parents, Anthony R. Fusco and Mary Catherine (Clarino) Fusco; by her husband, Wayne L. King I; her daughter, Katherine L. (King) Beams, and great-grandson, Aiden D. Holdren. Mary is survived by her children, Kathleen (King) Waite and her husband, Randy, of Cambridge, N.Y.; her daughter, Karen (King) Garvey and her husband, Glen, of Rutland; her son, Wayne L. King, II of West Rutland; her grandchildren, Jason Waite and wife, Angela, and their daughter Chloe, of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; Jacqulyn (Waite) Donisthorpe and husband, Derek, and their children, Breona and Cody of Cambridge, N.Y.; Daniel Trombley, II of Rutland, Jennifer (Trombley) Holdren and husband, Alex, and their son, Alexander, of Rutland; Stephen Beams and fiancee Marijke Shelmendine, of Jericho; and youngest granddaughter, Robynn Beams of Essex Junction. Mary Jo is also survived by her beloved brother, Anthony (Tony) Fusco and wife, Val, of Shrewsbury. In addition, Mary Jo is also survived by many Fusco and Clarino cousins, and four very special nieces, Gina (Fusco) Vitagliano, Christine (Fusco) Elliott, Darlene (King) Merrill and Doreen (King) Stoodley. Mary Jo leaves behind her dearest friend, Shelia (Donovan) Racette, and Shelia's family, including one of her many God-children, Tommy Racette. The family of Mary Jo would like to express their gratitude to all of those who assisted in caring for her, especially Gina Vitagliano, Dr. Ernie Bove, Patricia Tyree, Jeanee Powell, Shelia Racette, Darlene (King) Merrill and the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice. The support, kind-heartedness and prayers that enabled her to stay in her home are truly appreciated. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Bridget's Church in West Rutland today, Monday, June 30, at 2 p.m. A reception will immediately follow at The Palm's In Rutland at 3:30 p.m. Calling hours were held at CLIFFORD FUNERAL HOME, Washington Street, Rutland, on Sunday, June 29. As Mary Jo truly loved children and being a part of the Foster Grandparent Program, in lieu of flowers, contributions in her name would be greatly appreciated; The Green Mountain Foster Grandparent Program is located at 6 Court Street in Rutland City, VT 05701.
