Mary D. Gardner 1934-2012 BENNINGTON Mary D. Gardner, 78, widow of John E. (Jack) Gardner, a resident of Northside Drive, Bennington, died Monday, June 25, 2012 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Bennington on February 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late James and Julia (Elwell) Doyle. She received her education in the Bennington schools and was a graduate of Bennington High School. Mary and Jack were married at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on April 19, 1954. Jack died on May 14, 2012. For many years Mary was employed in the office of the former E. L. Nichols department store in Bennington. She later worked at the Bennington Museum until the time of her retirement. Mary enjoyed old movies, soap operas, playing cribbage and time spent with her family. Survivors include, four children, Julie Benoit and her companion, Peter Arseneau of Pittsfield, James Gardner and his wife Angel of Lexington Park, Md., Patricia Squiers and her companion Harvey Simmons of Schaghticoke, N.Y., and Steven Gardner of Bennington; seven grandchildren, Cody and Jamie Carpenter, Kimberly Sanders, Michael Gardner, Dylan, Tyler and Hannah Gardner. Mary is also survived by three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Carpenter and a sister, Patricia Doyle Engster. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 12 noon with Rev. James Holden officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
