BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Mary J. “Mae” Dashiell, 87, a resident of Prospect St., where she resided with her granddaughter, Deborah B. Radcliffe, and a former longtime resident of Albany, N.Y., died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

She was born in New York City and raised in Springfield, Mass. She was the daughter of the late George and Anna (Sheeran) Southworth. She received her education in Springfield. Mae later moved to Albany.

Mae was married to Herbert L. Dashiell Sr.

For 32 years, Mae was employed at St. Peter’s Hospital in the pediatric unit. She was known as the “Grandmother of Pediatrics.” Mae retired in 1980. While working at St. Peter’s, she was recognized as the employee of the month and employee of the year.

Mae was a member of the North Albany American Legion Post and the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Albany. She loved to play bingo, the lottery, cards, dancing and the outdoors. She also loved to go out to dinner and shopping. Her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were her main interest. She was very fond of her longtime companion, Frank Moore, and his family.

Survivors include her daughter, Gloria M. Radcliffe Sr. of Bennington; her grandchildren, Barbara Ann Radcliffe, Deborah B. Radcliffe, Mary Lisa Radcliffe, Robert Raymond Radcliffe and his wife, Victoria Radcliffe, and Raymond Joseph Radcliffe III; her great-grandchildren, Robert Strain, Cheri Strain, Cindi Radcliffe, Douglas Radcliffe, Darrell Radcliffe, Carri Radcliffe, Michael P. Radcliffe, Chad Mitchell Radcliffe, Matthew Radcliffe, Michael J. Cloutier, Lisa Cloutier and Brianna Radcliffe; her great-great-grandchildren, Kaylee Marie Radcliffe, Kaydence Marie Krause and Lucas Robert Strain; three nieces, Sharon Johnson, Kathy DeLoss and Colleen Bassett; a nephew, Bill Gatham Jr.; her brother-in-law, William Gatham. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Gloria M. Radcliffe Jr., her brother, James Southworth, a brother-in-law, Wallace Dashiell, and three sisters-in law, Janet Dashiell, Margaret Southworth and Frances Gatham.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Monday, July 3, 2006, at noon.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Memory’s Garden Cemetery in Colonie, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday from 10 a.m until the time of the service.
