Mary K. Lyons

Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mary K. Lyons, 92, widow of Charles Lyons, died early Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born June 6, 1911 in County Kerry, Ireland, land of deep blue lakes and misty green mountains. Her parents were John and Julia (Sullivan) O’Connor.

Mary left her Emerald Isle, family, and friends in 1929 for America at the age of 19 to become a “city girl” in Providence, Rhode Island.

Providence remained her home for 55 years until her move to Bennington eight years ago, to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Stan Cichanowski.

She was a loving support to those she left behind in Ireland, a wonderful single mom, a kind and sympathetic friend, a devout Catholic, and a staunch Democrat. Mary enjoyed life’s simple pleasures: a good laugh, a dry sunny day, a strong cup of coffee, the Providence Journal, a hardy Irish stew, news from the old country, family weddings, Sunday breakfast, a good days work, a good bargain, a bit of gossip, a gathering of women and the fresh scent and breeze of the ocean.

Mary faced many challenges in her 92 years, and she proved to be a gallant warrior.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Stan Cichanowski of Bennington; three grandsons, Michael Cichanowski and his wife Kate of Rockville, Md., Nicholas Cichanowski of Portland, Ore. and Benjamin Cichanowski of Hill City, S.D.; in Ireland, a brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Joan Sullivan; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Lyons; two nieces, Margaret Brennan and Margaret O’Connor and their families survive her; in America, her niece and nephew, Ann and John Sullivan of Providence; nephew Paul Lyons of Providence and niece Eileen Morrisey of South County, R.I.

The funeral will be held Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

There will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI where committal services will be held Saturday, October 4 at 11:45 a. m.

Contributions in Mrs. Mary Kay Lyons memory may be made to either Bennington Project Independence or to the “Rainy Day Fund” at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
