BENNINGTON -- Mary McCarthy Methfessel, 95, a former resident of Bennington and a longtime resident of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died June 12, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Bennington Oct. 18, 1910, and received her early education here. After attending the University of Vermont, she married Adolph Methfessel and moved to Fort Lauderdale.

She worked many years at the Tropical Acres Steak House and was the hostess at the Downtown Elks Club and later at the Riverside Hotel.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dennis, Daniel and Barney McCarthy, and her sister Ellen. She was the beloved mother of Barbara (Bobbie) Conrad and Diane Bleich; adoring grandmother of Michael Conrad, Linda Conrad Forrest and Susan, Michael and Lori Bleich. She leaves three great-grandchildren, Heather, Devin and Jenna Bleich. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marion McCarthy; her nephews, James, Bernard, Edward and Dennis McCarthy; and her nieces, JoAnn Abrams and Jane Colyer. She was always smiling with a twinkle in her eyes and had an infectious laugh.

A memorial Mass was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale on June 26, 2006.
