BENNINGTON -- Mary Theresa Bridget Mulligan, 84, a resident of Weeks Street, died peacefully Sunday, May 8, 2005, at her home.

Mrs. Mulligan was born in Wolcott on April 14, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Mary A. (Cullen) Kearney. She grew up in Beverly, Mass., where she graduated from Beverly High School. On Sept. 8, 1945, she was married to Lawrence J. Mulligan in the Bronx, N.Y.

They had made their home in West Nyack, N.Y. until relocating to Bennington in November 1971. Mr. Mulligan died June 24, 1976. Mrs. Mulligan had worked at the former Nichols Department Store on Main Street and as a secretary for the Vermont National Bank and for the Senior Citizens Community Program at the Vermont Veterans Home. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and had been a member of the church choir and ladies’ prayer group; she was an active member with Bennington Project Independence.

Mrs. Mulligan was very proud of her Irish heritage and traveled to Ireland twice. She enjoyed sewing and made several pieces of clothing, including bridesmaids’ dresses and wedding gowns. She also enjoyed reading, loved to sing and enjoyed the company of babies, animals and especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Mulligan is survived by her children, Paul Mulligan of Sugarloaf, N.Y., Edward Mulligan of Bennington, Katherine Bird of Naples, Fla., Margaret “Peggy” Mulligan of North Bennington, Susan Mulligan of Norwood, Mass., Martha Mulligan of Needham, Mass. and Loretta Mulligan-Shaw of Glens Falls, N.Y.; a brother, John Kearney of Beverly; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Theresa Mulligan, who died Jan. 13, 1993, and brothers Robert and Paul Kearney.

The liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church on Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m. A prayer service will precede the funeral Mass at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home at 9:45 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Mulligan family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., when the family will be present. The vigil service will be held that evening. Memorial gifts in memory of Mrs. Mulligan may be made to either Bennington Project Independence or Southwest Vermont Council of Aging in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
