Maureen Ann Higgins

1944-2012 Maureen Ann Higgins, age 68, a resident of Beach Rd. in Woodford, died on Monday evening, December 31, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a brief illness.

Maureen was born in North Adams, Mass., on March 4, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Marvin and Yvonne (Brooks) Simon. She received her education in North Adams, and graduated from St. Joseph's College in Bennington.

She married Ronald Higgins on September 3, 1966 in North Adams. Mr. Higgins survives.

Maureen had been a homemaker for many years, but had been employed in earlier years at the Sears stores in Boston, Mass., and Hartford, Conn. She later worked for twelve years at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington in the bookkeeping department and the mail room.

Maureen is a communicant of St. John the Baptist church in North Bennington, Vt. She was a member of the Mt. Greylock Chapter Sweet Adeline's, a member of the Board of Civil Authority in Woodford and a Justice of the Peace. She enjoyed singing and reading mystery novels.

Survivors besides her husband include her two children; Jennifer Sandquist and her husband John, Jr. of Bennington, and Timothy Higgins of Woodford, Vt. Maureen leaves one granddaughter, Tia Briere of Bennington. She has one brother and sister-in-law; Phillip and Carol Simon of Bennington, her sister-in-law, Judy Simon, and one foster sister Mary Chalifoux of Falmouth, Mass. Maureen is also survived by her very special nieces and nephews; Matthew, Jonathan, Kristen, Jillian, Christopher, Tina, Angelica and Patrick as well as special grand nieces and grand nephews.

Maureen is predeceased by one brother David Paul Simon, and her foster brother Warren McClendon.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be held on Saturday morning, January 5, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home 628 Main St. Bennington, followed by a Mass of Christian Death and Burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington.

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SVHC Regional Cancer Center or the Multiple Myloma Association through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
