BENNINGTON -- Maureen Kearns, formerly of Bennington and recently of Pittsfield, Mass., died on July 1, 2007, at the home of her sister in Leola, Pa.

Maureen was born in Bennington on May 2, 1942, and was the daughter of Rita Sausville Kearns and the late James “Mickey” Kearns. Maureen attended Sacred Heart School, graduated from Bennington Catholic High in 1960, received a B.S. from the University of Vermont and M.S. from North Adams State.

Maureen had a full and satisfying career as an elementary educator. She began her teaching career in Landenberg, Pa., and taught for several years at Cornwell Elementary in Vermont. She retired from teaching in 2003 after more than 30 years of teaching first and second grade in Dalton, Mass.

Maureen was a member of St. Charles Roman Catholic Church in Pittsfield, Mass., and was a frequent communicant at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales in Bennington, where she was member of the Society of the Ladies of St. Anne. She was also a long-time member of PEO, a women’s professional organization.

Maureen is survived by her mother, Rita Sausville Kearns, of Bennington; by her sisters, Judy Dudley, of New Ringgold, Pa, Pamela Minardi of Leola, Pa., Sheila Kearns of Montpelier; her brothers Kevin Kearns of Westford and Colin Kearns of Sarasota, Fla; ten nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Monday, July 9, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday, July 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington.
