Obituary Condolences

Maurice P. Taber 1925 - 2012 WHITE CREEK, NY Maurice Potter Taber, 86, a lifelong resident of White Creek, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Alice Wallen Taber. Born on the family homestead on April 10, 1925, he was the youngest son of Raymond James and Cora Potter Taber. Not only did he attend the one-room schoolhouse in White Creek for many years, Maurice would rise very early to start the fire at the schoolhouse so it would be warm for everyone. This began a lifelong devotion to helping others. He met Alice, who was originally from Staten Island, when she came north to visit her sister. They were married in 1948 and made their home on part of the family land on Quaker Hill Road. Recently, they moved over to Lincoln Hill Road, still on part of the family homestead property. All aspects of farming kept Maurice a busy man, yet he still found time to do electrical work and plumbing, helping build many White Creek homes. When it came to the family maple syrup operation, Maurice was the official "boiler," a position he was very proud of. He was a member of the White Creek Grange and the White Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He liked playing softball, hockey and snowmobiling with his family and friends, but he especially loved the time he and his children spent hunting and fishing together. Later in life he enjoyed helping Dany Tiley and Roger Moseley plant and harvest their crops. His love of gardening always provided the family with plenty of potatoes and corn. He looked forward to the annual White Creek Softball Tournament, which he enjoyed watching with his friends and family from the "Crik." In the early morning or evening, he could often be seen walking the hills that he loved so much and called home all his life. Along with his wife of 64 years, he is survived by four sons, Stephen Taber of Albany, Gregory Taber and wife Neila of Delmar, Toby Taber and wife Debbie of White Creek and Darryl Taber and wife Karen of Fairbanks, Alaska; a brother, Harold Taber of White Creek; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families. Three brothers, Wales, Warren and Ivan predeceased him. Maurice was a good neighbor and a wonderful husband and father. He will be greatly missed in the White Creek community. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held at a later time. For those wishing to remember Maurice in a special way, the family suggests donations in his name be made to: Friends of Hospice, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY 12839.
