1923-2013 BENNINGTON May Elizabeth (Birdsall Ash) Hayes, 90, a resident of Applegate died peacefully Friday September 27, 2013 at Centers For Living and Rehabilitation following a lengthy illness. May was born in Yonkers, N.Y. on August 3, 1923, she was the daughter of Frank and May (Josiah) Birdsall. She had worked in the restaurant business as a waitress for over 75 years. May was a life member of VFW Post 1332 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 13. She enjoyed sewing and cooking. Following a long and eventful life in Yonkers, N.Y., she relocated to Applegate in Bennington in 1998, where she served as president of the Applegate Housing Board of Directors and made many new friends. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, her cat Atlas and being near her son Kenn and his music. She lived independently until this past year and maintained a wonderful outlook on life. May was an inspiration and counselor to the many she shared her big heart with. She leaves her son and daughter in law, Kenneth and Kathleen Ash of Bennington; grandson David Maxwell Jr.; and great granddaughter, Shaylee Mae Maxwell both of Long Island. She was predeceased by a daughter, May E. Maxwell, and infant sons Alfred and Frank.
