BENNINGTON -- Melford C. “Spike” Bushee, 86, a lifelong resident of Bennington, died on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.

Born in Bennington on Jan. 1, 1919, he was the son of the late Edmund and Minnie (Coburn) Bushee. He received his education in North Bennington and Bennington.

Mr. Bushee was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force as a lead bombardier with the 409th Bomb Group. In 2001, through the efforts of Sen. James Jaffords, he was awarded an additional five medals he had not previously received.

For 45 years, Mr. Bushee owned and operated an automobile repair business specializing in foreign car repair. He was an avid and accomplished dry-fly fisherman who particularly loved fishing the Mettowee and Battenkill rivers. Mr. Bushee also enjoyed the many years he spent with his family at their cottage on Lake St. Catherine.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Coleen and Thomas Macksey of Shaftsbury; three grandchildren, Jennifer Parizo, Tracy Bushee and Christopher Macksey; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Bushee was predeceased by a son, Martin D. Bushee in 1980.

At Mr. Bushee’s request, funeral services will be private. There are no calling hours scheduled. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.
