Merritt A. "Digger" O'Dell 1919 - 2008 BENNINGTON Merritt A. "Digger" O'Dell, 89, a resident of Homestead Mews in North Bennington,formerly of South Stream Road in Bennington, died Saturday morning, May 31, 2008 at the Albany (NY) Medical Center, following a brief illness. Born in Bennington on April 13, 1919, son of Merritt B. and Hazel Fiske O'Dell, he received his education in Bennington schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 389th Division under General Douglas MacArthur. Mr. O'Dell started working at H.T.Cushman Furniture in 1938 which later became Green Mountain Furniture. Following the war, he returned to Bennington and to Cushman's and was with the Green Mountain Furniture Company until he retired in 1977 as the top stainer and lacquer applicator. Merritt was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1332 of Bennington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and clock repair. He leaves his wife, the former Beatrice Carpenter, whom he married in Bennington on Nov. 29, 1941. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Gary O'Dell and wife, Barbara, of Shaftsbury, and Glenn O'Dell and companion, Alberta "Bert," also of Shaftsbury; five grandchildren and five great -grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Bevis of Rutland, and Mildred Malone of Medina, N.Y.; four brothers, Leon O'Dell of Shaftsbury, and William O'Dell, Roland O'Dell and Donald O'Dell all of Bennington, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Leazer, and by a brother, Vernon O'Dell. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, with the Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, officiating. Interment will take privately in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today, Monday, June 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials for Merritt O'Dell may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
