Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Michael D. Hackett, 53, a resident of Gage Street in Bennington, died on Sunday morning, June 4, 2006, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness. He was born in Newport on Nov. 10, 1952, the son of the late Warren Dale and Alice Marguerite (Curtis) Hackett.

He attended local schools.

Michael was an avid car enthusiast, he loved NASCAR and was a big fan of Jeff Gordon. He moved to Bennington in 1976 and was employed at several manufacturing companies, including U.S. Tsubaki, Taconic Manufacturing, E. L. Sibley and Bijur. He was most recently employed at NSK in Bennington.

He married the former Beverly Flagg in Bennington on July 25, 1992. Mrs. Hackett predeceased him on April 19, 2006. Michael had been a Bennington weather watcher for the local television station. He was a ham radio operator and a member of the Southwestern Vermont Amateur Radio Club. He loved tinkering, especially with electronics. Michael was an avid reader and amateur archivist, having logged several musical groups by tape, album, cassette or CD. He enjoyed traveling. Michael is a former member of the Bennington Eagles Lodge.

He is survived by a stepson, George F. Harkins of Bennington; his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Denise and Jonathan McCraw of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Chris W. Hackett, and his fiancé, Delsaye Bowen, of Derby Line; two grandchildren, Shelby and Jacob Harkins, both of Pownal; also nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., with the Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, officiating. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours scheduled.
