Michael G. Walsh 1930 - 2008 BENNINGTON Michael G. Walsh, 78, a resident of Austin Hill Road died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, while vacationing with his family. Born in New York, N.Y., on Feb. 23, 1930, son of Michael and Elizabeth O'Leary Walsh, Mike received his education in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. He served two terms in the Navy, one term during the Korean War. After his service in the Navy he became a police officer in Queens, until his retirement in 1976. He then moved to Bennington with his family and he worked as a private security guard in Vermont, New York and Williamstown, Mass. Mike's primary focus throughout his life was his family, his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and childhood friends. He loved the beach and his home in Bennington. His wife, the former Mary E. Fries, whom he married Oct. 5, 1957 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Belle Harbor, N.Y., died Feb. 26, 2005. He leaves his children, Michael J. Walsh of Bennington, Robert C. Walsh and his wife, Lynne, of Rutland, Patricia Walsh Howe of Winthrop, Maine, and Peter G. Walsh and his wife, Penny, of Colchester; five grandsons, Nolen, Avery, Corbin, Michael and Charles; a step-granddaughter, Lylly, and a sister, Nancy Walsh of New York. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen McErlean FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be Monday, July 14, 2008, from the MAHAR and SON FUNERAL HOME at 10:30 am with a prayer and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, July 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. In lieu of flowers if friends desire, contributions in memory of Michael G. Walsh may be made to either Hospice of Bennington County or the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
