Michael Gorman

POWNAL, VT Michael Gorman died quietly in his home in Pownal on Monday, March 22, 2010. He was 62.He was the son of the late James M. Gorman of North Adams and Marilyn Shirley Willette Gorman Alderman. Michael was born in North Pownal and lived in North Adams and Clarksburg.

He was an ardent student of history and a keen genealogist. Mike was a direct descendant of Malaghin O'Gorman of the Lords of Clahanemore of County Clare, Ireland, on his father's side. On his mother's side, he was a direct descendant of many founders of Canada. Among them were Louis Hebert, an early founder of Quebec, and also Matharin Oulette, whose great-grandson traveled to the French settlement of Detroit.

His mother's family was very influential in the exploration of North America. They founded many of the settlements along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, as far east as Pittsburgh, as far south as Mobile, Ala., and as far west as Provo, Utah.

Mike was a Vietnam Combat Veteran and a survivor of countless encounters with the enemy. He was seriously disabled from a gunshot wound in the Vietnam War on Jan. 23, 1969, and spent the last 42 years of his life in a wheelchair. He was the founding president of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Ch. #54, of North Adams.

He was married May 9, 1969, in Adams to Linda Wellspeak of Adams. They divorced amicably in early May 1979.

He was the father of Kimberly J. Gorman Gavagan, who now lives in Mendham , N.J. He also is the grandfather of two beautiful granddaughters, Audrey and Sophia Gavagan. He is the brother of James Gorman of Pownal and Kathleen Gorman Gillis of Framingham, Mass. He also has two nieces and two nephews.

At the request of Michael there will be no calling hours.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in North Pownal, VT, on Friday, March 26, 2010, at 11 a.m. The burial with military honors will follow at the family lot in South View Cemetery in North Adams, MA .
