Michael Rey Colgan, 72, a former resident of Bennington, died Monday, January 9, 2017 at The Pines Nursing Home in Lyndonville, Vermont following a long illness.

Born in Rome, New York January 13, 1944, he was the son of the late Dr. Rey and Elizabeth (Clifford) Colgan. Mike received his education in Rome where he was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. A Vietnam Veteran, Mike served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1961 - 1965.

In earlier years Mike served as a deputy sheriff in Bennington County before joining the Bennington Police Department in 1984. He served as an officer and detective in Bennington until 1999 when he accepted a position as an investigator with the Secretary of State's office in Montpelier. At the time of his retirement from the State of Vermont Mike was serving as Chief of Investigations for the department.

Mike married the former Anne Shultz in Hoosick Falls, NY on January 28, 1989.

Following retirement Mike and Anne moved to Cody, Wyoming where they resided for several years before returning to Vermont and settling in Marshfield.

An avid outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed hunting, riding his Harley and attending Norwich University ice hockey games. Mike will be deeply missed by his best friend, his dog Norman.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Colgan of St Johnsbury; a son, Peter Colgan of Rome, NY; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy-Colgan and Matt Miffitt of Colchester, VT; a grandson, Liam Colgan Miffitt; two brothers, James Colgan of Marshfield and Christopher (Cathy) Colgan of Rome; two sisters, Barbara (Gary) Cooper of Inverness, FL and Patricia (Vinnie) Miglori of Ava, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be held from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Wright's Settlement Cemetery in Rome at the convenience of the family.
