CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Michael “Gene” Vogel, 76, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Gail Palmer Vogel.

Born Oct. 22, 1931, in Rochester, he was the son of Michael W. and Velma Swager Vogel. After graduating from Penfield High School in Penfield, N.Y., he served in the Army from May 1952 to Feb. 1954 reaching the rank of corporal.

He and Gail were married on Oct. 18, 1958.

They moved to Cambridge in 1969 when Michael took a job with Asgrow Seed Co. as a supervisor. He worked with them until they closed the Cambridge operation in 1976. He completed his working career at Columbia Corporation in Walloomsac.

Michael was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Salem and a member of the VFW Post in Greenwich.

He loved gardening, was quite a bowler in his younger years and was an avid Baltimore Oriole fan.

A brother, Robert Vogel, died before him.

Besides his wife of 49 years, Michael is survived by three children and their spouses, Karen and George Kaufmann of Hoosic, Karel and Roger Holcomb of Cambridge and Michael J. and Resa Vogel of Salem; five grandchildren, Kylin Vogel, John and Eric Kaufmann, Brenden Holcomb and Josh Justin and wife Tammy; a great-granddaughter, Peyton Justin; a cousin Marion Kostek of Buffalo and two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Gary and Pam Palmer and Gregg and Melanie Palmer, all of Lima, N.Y.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main Street, Cambridge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Liam Condon at Holy Cross Church, North Main Street Salem on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Center Cambridge Road, Cambridge.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Friends of Hospice, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY 12839 or Southwestern Vermont Cancer Center, 140 Hospital Drive, Bennington, VT 05901.
