BENNINGTON -- Myrtle S. Betit, 78, widow of Joseph T. Betit, a resident of Gage Street, Bennington, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003 at Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. following complications from surgery.

Born in Bennington March 29, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Frank Ray and Elfrieda (Kittel) Stemp. She received her education in the Bennington schools.

Mr. and Mrs. Betit were married on June 21,1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Mr. Betit died December 14, 1990.

In earlier years Mrs. Betit was employed at EZ Mills, the Polygraphic Co. and Union Carbide Corp. She was later employed for several years at Thompson Manufacturing Co. price to her retirement.

Mrs. Betit was a devout member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church where she belonged to the Holy Family Prayer Group, the Vermont Curcillo group and St. Annes Society. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and the Brooklyn Belles. Mrs. Betit, was a former member the Eight and Forty Club and the American Legion Post 13 Auxiliary

She enjoyed needlecraft and collecting bells and dolls.

Survivors include four sons, Lawrence J. Betit, Mark E. Betit and Paul Betit, all of Bennington and Joseph L. Betit of Pownal; four daughters, Denise Wetzel of Fairbourne, Ohio, Paula Davis of Tucson, Ariz., and Jean Kellum and Karen Wellspeak both of Bennington; twenty-four grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucy Latif of Bennington and Doris Marino of Brentwood, Long Island, N.Y.; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mrs. Betit was predeceased by two brothers, Francis Stemp and Edward Stemp.

The funeral will be held Friday, Nov. 14, 2003 at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Thursday evening at 8:45 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Betit may be made to Sacred Heart School through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of the Women of the Moose are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. to conduct services in memory of Myrtle Betit. All members of St. Anne’s Society are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday evening at 7 p.m. for the recitation of the rosary for Mrs. Betit.
