Nancy Alden 1944 - 2009 POWNAL, VT Nancy Alden died peacefully at her home on Saturday after a courageous and graceful battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends with a view of Mt. Greylock and the flowers she loved from her bedroom window. Nancy was a loving and devoted mother of two children and a generous and warm friend to many. She was well known and loved for her gracious hospitality, her caring nature, and her wry sense of humor. A longtime Williamstown resident, Nancy moved from Vermont with her late husband, William C. "Bill" Alden, in the 1970s. After more than 30 years in Williamstown, she moved to Pownal in 2006. Nancy gave generously of her time to a variety of organizations and institutions. An avid tennis enthusiast, she was Head Coordinator of Williamstown's Chafee-Hart Memorial Seniors Tennis Tournament, an annual event with which she was affiliated for 20 seasons. Nancy also held Head Usher positions at tournaments at Stratton Mountain, at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Mass., and in New Haven, Conn. In 1994, the U.S. Tennis Association of New England recognized her with an award for outstanding service. Nancy founded the Indian Mountain School Parent-Teacher Organization and was an active member of the Pine Cobble School community. She also held leadership positions in the Williamstown Garden Club. Under her stewardship, the club received First Place Civic Project award from the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts in 1995. For over a decade, Nancy was the innkeeper of Buxton Brook Farm, a popular bed and breakfast she ran from her home on Northwest Hill Road. She was born Nancy K. Bierce on March 1, 1944, in Englewood, N.J. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1966, Nancy became the first female officer in her department at Bankers Trust Co. in New York, N.Y., where she was an investment advisor. She leaves her children, Cornelia Alden of Williamstown, Mass., and Seth Alden of Pownal; her mother, Joyce Lawrence, a Sweetwood resident; a sister, Pamela Bierce of Philadelphia, Penn.; brothers, Alexander "Sandy" Bierce of Charlotte, N.C., and William Bierce of Mt. Kisco, N.Y.; three nieces and a nephew. Bill Alden died in 1980. MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Williamstown, Mass., with a reception to follow.
