Obituary Condolences

Nancy E. Andrews SHAFTSBURY Nancy E. Andrews, 84, a resident of Shaftsbury, and Fort Pierce, Fla., died Friday, October 8, 2010 at her home in Florida after a brief illness. Nancy was born in Norwood, Mass., daughter of Henry F. Breen, Jr. and Gertrude (Greer) Breen, the fourth of seven children. She received her education in Norwood and later attended the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. She married Robert W. Andrews of Milton, Mass., in Norwood on October 30, 1948. They had been married for 53 years at the time of Bob's death in 2002. Together, they raised five children, who were their pride and joy. Nancy was a natural athlete who passed on her love of sports to all her children. She often reminisced about being able to throw a basketball the length of the Norwood High School gymnasium hard enough to open the door at the other end. The week before giving birth to her youngest child, she demonstrated how to dive off a springboard to a local girl scout troop. She was a good swimmer and remained physically fit until the end of her life. Nancy was also an excellent bridge player who lost her favorite partner when Bob died. She continued to play bridge both in Vermont and in Florida but it "just wasn't the same without Bobby." She was an avid reader who passed on her love of books to all her children. She was known to quote Emily Dickinson fondly, "There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away...." Nancy faced her final weeks with strength and determination. She spent her final weeks at her home in Florida doing what she loved best -- going to the beach and enjoying the water, the glorious sunshine, and the company of her daughters. She was a strong person and she will be missed. Nancy is survived by her five children and their spouses: son David and his wife, Madeline Andrews, of Manchester, N.H.; daughter Sue Andrews and her husband, William Christian, of Shaftsbury; daughter Nancy Andrews and her husband, Campbell D'Alton, of Worcester, Mass.; daughter Leslie Andrews and her partner, Adrienne Wax, of East Hampton, N.Y.; and daughter Jane Andrews and her husband, Carlo Poggi, of Vignola, Italy. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Breen and Janet Kane of Norwood, Mass., and Lucy Monahan Burton of New Hampton, N.H.; her brother, John Breen of Norwood; granddaughter Katherine Andrews of Bedford, N.H.; grandson Michael Andrews and his wife, Kayla of Burlington, Conn.; grandsons Jonathan Christian of Nashville, Tenn., Matthew Christian of Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., three great-grandchildren, and 22 nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her parents, and her brothers Henry Breen and Joseph Breen. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on October 23 at 11 a.m. followed by interment at St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to a party in celebration of Nancy's life at the home of Sue Andrews and Bill Christian immediately following the interment. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Nancy's memory to the Vermont New Hampshire Affiliate of through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
