Nancy C. Romain 1917 - 2009 MANCHESTER CENTER Nancy C. Romain, 92, of Manchester Center, formerly of Allendale, N.J., passed away at peace with our Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at home. She was the beloved wife of 57 years to Burchard P. Romain. She was born on Jan. 5, 1917 in Passaic, N.J., where she was raised by her parents, John P. and Elizabeth Ransome Clifford. Nancy completed her BS and RN from NYU School of Nursing and Johns Hopkins. After a short term in the Englewood Public Schools, Mom was commissioned (Lt. Jg.) in the Navy - Nurse Corps. In early 1945, Nancy was assigned to a Navy Hospital designated to mend and care for the casualties of the 1945 Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. Nancy's recollection of the need for safety on Guam was to never go off base with out an (armed) Marine and a Jeep. Following a safe return stateside via a three-week cruise to Seattle, Nancy came back to New Jersey, taking up her nursing work in the Englewood, N.J., public schools. In 1951, the Navy called again and Nancy served at the Navy Hospital in Philadelphia. Marrying Burchard at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Ramsey, N.J., Jan. 4, 1952, and residing in Ramsey,Nancy joined the D.A.R., National Society of New England Women and began her family life, active in the parish community of St. John's Ramsey, and Church of the Epiphany, Allendale, N.J. Nancy actively supported the Kurn Hattin Homes, American Red Cross and many more causes. In 1986, Bert and Nancy moved to Manchester, where Nancy worked with vigor in the Zion Episcopal Church thrift shop and made hundreds of children's gift dolls in her last year. Nancy leaves her husband of 57 years, Burchard P. Romain; brother (Hon.) Robert L. and Ruth Clifford of Chester, N.J.; daughters, Andrea R Winchell of Washington, D.C., and Jane and Allen LeBrun of Chester, Maine; a son John F. and Suzanne B. Romain of Sudbury, Mass., and eight wonderful grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be today, Thursday, May 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Zion Episcopal Church. Internment will be private.
