CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Nancy J. Murphy, 72, formerly of Cambridge, died Monday, July 14, 2003 at the Pleasant Valley Adult Care Home in Argyle where she had resided the past two years. She was the devoted wife of James J. Murphy. Born Oct. 20, 1930 in Decatur, Ill., she was the daughter of Joe L. and Marie (Stephens) Slade. She graduated from Decatur High School and then worked for 12 years at the Herald Newspaper.

Nancy then moved to New York City where she worked for a public relations firm. It was in Manhattan on July 3, 1960 that she met Jim Murphy. His job moved him to California and they were married on May 6, 1961 in Hollywood. For 29 years, she was the business editor of the American Appraisal Association in Pasadena.

On May 16, 1996, Nancy and Jim moved to Cambridge, where he had family ties. They built their beautiful home, which they named “Happy Hill at Slade Way.” Unfortunately, it was only a few years later that Nancy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

A devout Roman Catholic, she was a member of St. Patrick’s Church both in Decatur and in Cambridge.

A brother, James Slade, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Decatur. Another brother, Joe Slade, also predeceased her in 1975 .

Besides her husband of 42 years, a brother and his wife, David and Sharon Slade of Decatur, 22 nieces and nephews, and 30 great-nieces and great-nephews survive her.

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, July 18, 2003 at the Ackley and Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge, from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and the Legion of Mary will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Father Joseph Getz at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations be made to either St. Patrick’s Church, 17 South Park St., Cambridge, NY 12816, or the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816.

Nancy will be remembered as the perfect wife, completely devoted to her husband. She was a wonderful person with a dry sense of humor, possessing the virtue of simplicity.
