Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Nancy S. Clayton, 93, a resident of Barnes Road in East Montpelier and formerly of Bennington, died on Thursday morning, Dec. 16, 2004 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.

Mrs. Clayton was born on Feb. 5, 1911, in Bennington, the daughter of Tarrant and Fanny (Thatcher) Sibley. She was a 1928 graduate of Bennington High School and was married to Kenneth R. Clayton on Aug. 15, 1931.

A longtime resident of Bennington, Mrs. Clayton worked for many years at the county court and served as the county clerk from 1966 to 1969. Mrs. Clayton was a member of the Second Congregational Church. The Claytons moved to Montpelier in 2003 to be closer to their children.

Mrs. Clayton is survived by her husband of 73 years, Kenneth R. Clayton; her daughter, Barbara C. Ploof and her husband Allen and her son K. Putnam Clayton and his wife Susan, all of East Montpelier; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Frances Malota and two brothers, Edward T. Sibley and Tarrant L. Sibley.

Graveside services for Mrs. Clayton will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sibley Family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington. The Rev. Mary Lee-Clark, pastor of the Second Congregational Church, will officiate. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family in Webster Hall at the Second Congregational Church for a time of fellowship and refreshment.
