MANCHESTER -- Nellie M. Pike Burke, 85, a resident of The Meadows in Manchester and formerly of Arlington, died peacefully Tuesday morning, Dec. 25, 2007, at Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland.

Nellie was born in East Arlington on Dec. 25, 1922, the daughter of Thomas Thornton and Ellen Ida (Brockway) Willis, and attended local schools. She married Paul E. Pike on July 27, 1940, at the Federated Church of East Arlington. Mr. Pike died May 2, 1996.

Ellie worked for nearly 23 years at the Orvis Company as a mail clerk, retiring at the age of 70. Ellie loved people, including all her friends and neighbors. She loved to volunteer, especially driving for the cancer society bringing patients to their doctor appointments, and did so at 82 years of age.

She was a volunteer for Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Manchester Health Services and volunteered at the Visiting Nurses Association Thrift Shop. Ellie learned to play golf at the age of 62 and became such an avid golfer that it was the best activity she ever learned. She loved to travel and cherished times spent with her family. Nellie was a member of the Federated Church of East Arlington, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Arlington and the American Legion Auxiliary, also in Arlington.

She is survived by her second husband Owen F. Burke Jr. of Manchester, whom she married at the Federated Church in East Arlington on Sept. 10, 1999; her children: Claudia Pike Sendra of Mt. Tabor, Carol Pike O’Dell of Shaftsbury, Gerald P. Pike of Manchester, and Thomas M. Pike of Bennington; her sisters: Elizabeth “Betty” Lyman of White Plains, N.Y., and Frances Turner of Ocala, Fla.; her stepchildren, Joanna LeClair of Hilton Head Island, S.C., Heather Needes of Pennsylvania and Shawn Burke of Granville, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James, Martin and Silas Willis and her sisters: Rose Hoyt and Florence Champlin.

Funeral services for Nellie will be held Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church in East Arlington. Rev. Kathleen Clark will conduct the service. Interment will follow in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland. There are no visiting hours.
