Nellie (Betty) Cook

1923-2013 EAST DORSET Nellie (Betty) Cook, 90, formerly of East Dorset, and Florida, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Birchwood Nursing Home in Burlington. Nellie was born in Roxbury, on July 7, 1923, the daughter of Beaman and Ethel (King) Howe. She spent her childhood in Roxbury with her siblings Warren, Henry, Marie, Arlene and Florence, and attended schools in Montpelier. She attended six months of college before she went to work in a factory to help the war effort. Her main occupation was raising her children, but also spent time working as a part-time housekeeper and working for the school cafeteria system in Dorset and Manchester and also worked at Orvis. Nellie was the President of the Dorset PTA, and was a very active member of the East Dorset of Congregational Church where she was a member of the women's auxiliary, and played the organ. Nellie enjoyed needlework, playing gin rummy, solitaire, bingo and cooking. She was known for her specialty, strawberry shortcake. With her husband Alfred, she enjoyed camping on Cape Cod and at Lake St. Catherine. Her most memorable vacation was one she took to Hawaii to visit one of her sons who was in the Air Force. Most of all Nellie will be remembered as a great mom who was greatly loved by her family. Nellie is survived by her children , Marilyn Artsma of Acadia, Fla., Alfred Cook, Jr. of Defuniak Spring, Fla., Anita Oglesby and her husband Don of Dickinson, Texas, Sidney Cook and his wife Cindy of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Donald Cook and his wife Linda of Essex; 13 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, expecting two more great-grandchildren in November. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Cook, Sr. , whom she married in Barre, Massachusetts on June 15, 1946. Mr. Cook died April 8, 2003. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Bovey, and her siblings. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Nellie will be held Thursday, September 26, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the East Dorset Congregational Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in South Village Cemetery in East Dorset. There are no visiting hours.
