Norma K. Allen

1921-2015 BENNINGTON Norma K Allen, 93, died on Sunday March 1, 2015 at The Center for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt. after a lengthy battle with Father Time and cancer. After 66 years of marriage, Kay did not hesitate to be with her late husband Alfred A. Allen, Jr., who passed away just prior, on Friday, February 27th., 2015, at the same facility. Norma was born in Bennington, on August 27, 1921, to the late John "Jack" Gorman and Hazel (Tripp) Gorman. She received her education attending Bennington schools and was employed over the years at Eveready Battery, Atkin's and Gould Jewelers, Carrol's Cut Rite and Quinlan's pharmacies. She married Alfred A. Allen, Jr. on Oct. 10, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Kay was a Girl Scout Leader, a member of The Catholic Daughters and a volunteer Grey Lady at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Kay was also a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to her entire family and those in her community. A creative arts and crafts designer, Kay's productions could be seen at the many craft shows throughout the area. She was a splendid baker whose favorite confections included her ever-popular "Whoopie-Pies", rice puddings, Boston Cream pies and her luscious raspberry, pineapple and fig tarts. Kay also enjoyed her very close neighborhood friends and attended regular "Coffee Clique" meeting with them in her free time. Kay was a communicant of Sacred Heart/St. Francis Church. Survivors include three daughters, Lynn (John) Hennessey of Danby, Vt., Ann (John) Herko of Winooski, Vt., Cathy (Mark) Cota of W. Rutland, Vt., and two sons, Gary and wife, Cynthia (Latif) of Mocksville, N.C., and John and wife, Cathy-Crafts of Brattleboro. Surviving grandchildren are Michael Allen, Nicholas Allen, Joshua Hennessey, Kristin Hennessey, Dustin Cone, Courtney Cone, Griffin Allen, Daniel Allen, Christopher Herko and Alex Herko. Also surviving are two sisters, Marie McKeon of Bennington, Vt. and Jane Simon of Adams, Mass. She also leaves one brother, John Gorman of North Bennington, Vt. Kay had six great-grandchildren as well as a multitude of very special nieces, nephews and close friends which she also leaves behind. Norma Kay was predeceased in death, by two days, by her husband of 66 years Alfred A. Allen, Jr., and earlier by sisters; Marjorie Croll of Valley Falls, N.Y., Marilyn Sausville Beckwith of Clearwater, Fla., as well as infant sister, Patricia Gorman, twin sister to Marilyn. A memorial service and Christian burial will be held later this Spring at a time to be announced. There will be no immediate calling hours at the family's request.
