PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Mrs. Norma C. Barriere, 83, of Richmond, died Monday, May 31, 2004 at the Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield on March 1, 1921, she was the daughter of Ernest and Johanna Tresh Stoessel. She was a resident of Pittsfield for most of her life and a 1939 graduate of Pittsfield High School. She attended Smith College for two years and graduated from the BCC nursing program with a registered nurse degree in 1976.

Mrs. Barriere was employed as an operating room tech at the former Pittsfield General Hospital and Berkshire Medical Center.

She was employed as a registered nurse at the former St. Luke’s Hospital and the Berkshire Medical Center, retiring in 1990 with a combined 50 years working in the medical field.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

She leaves three sons, Bernard L. Barriere Jr. of Shaftsbury, Vt., and Thomas and Robert Barriere, both of Pittsfield; a daughter, Linda A. Barriere of Richmond, with whom she made her home; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barriere also leaves several nieces and nephews. Bernard L. Barriere Sr. died Oct. 2, 1996. A daughter, Marie Barriere Kinnas, died in 1987. A son, Richard L. Barriere Sr., died July 31, 2000, and another son, John Barriere, died May 14, 2003.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 3 at 10 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home with a liturgy of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church celebrated by the Rev. Paul Bombardier, pastor. Burial will follow in the Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the Dwyer Funeral Home on Thursday morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m.Robert P. Rutnik
