Norma L. Corey 1937 - 2009 BENNINGTON Norma L. Corey, 72, wife of George E. Corey, of Pine Road died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at her residence, following a courageous 17 year battle with breast cancer. Born in Manchester on Feb. 19, 1937, daughter of Harold E. and Harriett West McEckron, Norma received her education in the Manchester schools and was a 1955 graduate of Burr & Burton Seminary. For many years Norma was employed in the circulation department of the Bennington Banner. Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church. For the past several years, Norma and George had spent their winters in Tarpon Springs, Fla. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, going out to lunch with "the girls," crossword puzzles and especially spending time with her loving family. Norma and George were married Jan. 19, 1956, at the Manchester Baptist Church. Besides her husband, she leaves a son and daughter-in-law, George A. "Andy" and Jacqueline Corey of Pownal; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and William McGurn of Bennington and Julie and John Southmayd of Chester, N.H.; eight grandchildren, Adrienne, John and Matthew Corey, Hanna, Mallory and Rochelle McGurn and Corey and Kyle Southmayd; a great-granddaughter, Kyla Chloe McGurn; four siblings, Helene Wilkins of Rutland, Rose Waytkus of Hoosick Falls, Raymond McEckron of Granville, N.Y. Catherine "Kitty" Leary of East Dorset and Charlotte Jones of Arlington, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Norma was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, John West, Gladys Guinan, Marjorie Norse, Harold Frederick McEckron, Harriett Hayes, Frances Mitchell and George McEckron. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, May 2, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. when a service celebrating the life of Norma Corey will be offered by the Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service at Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in Norma L. Corey's memory may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
