BENNINGTON - Norman E. Main 85 a longtime resident of Bennington passed away peacefully on Sunday January 8, 2017 at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Bennington on March 18, 1931 , he was the son of Daniel J. Main and Hazel Hedding. He grew up in North Bennington where he was raised by his mother, Hazel and step father Earl Lewis , he attended North Bennington schools , graduating from North Bennington High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army and upon his return he married the former Phyllis Mae Squiers at The First United Methodist Church on April 30, 1955 , they made their home in Bennington raising seven children. He had worked at Cushman Furniture and for many years he had worked at the North Adams Regional Hospital and Putnam Memorial Hospital (now SVMC) .

Norman was a member of the Harvest Christian Ministries, a huge NASCAR fan , he enjoyed following his favorite driver Jeff Gordon, Norman loved Chevy cars, especially the older Nova's, and he loved to drive and go on long rides. He always had a love for trains as his father had been a locomotive mechanic. He was an avid Yankees fan and had enjoyed spending time outdoors - camping with family, fishing and he truly had a passion for hunting.

He leaves his wife Phyllis of Bennington, children and their spouses ; Steven and Kathy Main of Alton, VA, Jeffrey and Sue Main of Pownal, Brian and Marie Main of Bennington, Lisa and Brian Kelley of Fayetteville, NC, Barry and Wanda Main of Bennington and Melanie and Larry Slavin Jr. of Melbourne, FL, daughter in law Joanne Main of Bennington, 28 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son Danny Main who died March 27, 1916 a sister Phyllis Kirk, step sister Rachel and step brother Morris Main.

SERVICES: Funeral services will be held on Thursday January 12 at 11am at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, officiating will be Norman's daughter in law the Reverend Sue Main. Burial will take place in the Grandview Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm when the family will be present.
