Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Oliver W. Virta Sr., 86, a resident of Hidden Valley Road, died on Monday evening, July 12, 2004 at the Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center following brief illness.

He was born in Alberta, Canada on April 30, 1918 and was the son of the Rev. Arthur F. and Wilhelmina Virta. He was raised in Gardner, Mass., where he attended local schools. He served with the Army during World War II in Europe and was a skier with the infantry. Following the war he returned to Massachusetts and went to work for New England Telephone. At the time of his retirement, he was involved with PBX installations and maintenance. Mr. Virta was instrumental in setting up the PBX system at Williams College.

He married the former Mary Lucas in Fitchburg, Mass. on Oct. 27, 1941. Mrs. Virta survives. Mr. Virta enjoyed swimming and skiing, both cross-country and downhill. He was a great lover of animals, and an avid golfer.

Mr. Virta is survived by his wife of Pownal; one son, Oliver W. Virta Jr. of Brookline, Mass.; his brother, William; and his sister, Ruth; five grandchildren and a great-grandson; many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon, July 16, at 1 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. in Bennington. Military honors will be offered as part of the services. Friends may call at the funeral on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Bennington Recreational Center through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
