Osborne Y. Gaines "Doc" 1926-2010 HOOSICK FALLS, NY Osborne Y. "Doc" Gaines 84 a resident of Emmons Road died unexpectedly Saturday morning December 11, 2010 at his home. Mr. Gaines was born in Easton, Pa., on June 25, 1926, he was the son of Carl and Eleanor (Yellott) Gaines. He grew up in Easton where he attended local schools, following high school, he entered the US Navy during World War II where he served on the Aircraft Carrier, Bon Homme Richard. He later graduated from Oswego College with a teaching degree, he was married to the former Harriet Emmons in Bennington on June 25, 1949. In earlier years Mr. Gaines had worked on the family farm-Breezy Hill Farm, he was a Surge Milking Equipment dealer and had been a field agent for the Rensselaer County Soil and Water Services, for many years he had been an Industrial Arts teacher at the Mt. Anthony Junior High School, he later worked at the Bennington Pottery. He was a devoted and committed lay leader of the First Baptist Church of Bennington where he worked diligently to preserve the church and make in prosper. One summer he brought his family to a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona where learned the art of carving and shaping in sand stone. Since there is not much sandstone in this area he used wood and became an accomplished wood carver and sold many of his carvings at Camelot Village, area farmers markets along with his wife's crafts and to many vendors in the Northeast. He also enjoyed photography and would often turn pictures into carvings. He liked maple sugaring, leather working and had traveled extensively with his family during the summer , visiting 49 states . Mr. Gaines leaves his wife, Harriet of Hoosick Falls, son and daughter in law Benjamin and Calli Gaines of Hoosick Falls, grandchildren Carl, April, Cody, Justin and Tyler Gaines and a great granddaughter. He was predeceased by a son Chris Gaines on April 30, 2007, a daughter Barbara Benner on March 15, 1981 and a sister Neil Brighton. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Monday December 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of Bennington with the Reverend Jerrod Hugenot, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Bennington Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the First Baptist Church on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. when the family will be present.
