BENNINGTON -- Funeral services for Patricia Ann Barr were held on Sunday morning June 22, 2003 in the Usdan Gallery at Bennington College with Rabbi Howard Cohen of Bennington Congregation Beth El officiating. Special musical selections for the service sung by Randall Miller included “Psalm 121,” “Shalom Rav” and “Lech Lecha.” “Amazing Grace” was sung by Linda Allard and Becky Candal.

Rabbi Cohen offered personal remberances of Ms. Barr and read memories and poems provided by her husband Rolf Sternberg and daughters Shira and Tava. Personal memories, tributes and eulogies were offered by many in attendance including Debra Delee, Ceil Bandman, Michael Barr, Peter Lawrence, U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and Karen Scharfstein. Serving as bearers were Neil Moss, Michael Barr, Alan Scharfstein, David Scharfstein, Donald Mided, Charles Stewart, Sally Gottesman, Bernard Bandman, Arnold Miller and Ed Gulley.

En route to the Bennington Hebrew Cemetery, the funeral cortege paused at the entrance to Bennington Congregation Beth El and at the law offices of Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence, Silver and Saltonstall. Rabbi Cohen offered the burial prayers at the gravesite. The family will be sitting Shiva at their home three nights, Sunday through Tuesday.

Among the several hundred people attending the service were several members of the Vermont Bar Association, Southwestern Vermont Health Care, physicians and staff, Vermont state senators and representatives, members of Bennington Congregation Beth El, National Breast Cancer Coalition and Americans for Peace Now. Ms. Barr, a leading activist and attorney, died June 19 at her home in Shaftsbury at the age of 52.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.
