ARLINGTON -- Patrick Michael Cross, 47, a resident of Old West Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 25, 2004 in Arlington. Pat was born in Bennington on March 19, 1957; he was the son of the late Bernard and Hazel (Hall) Cross. He received his education in Sunderland and Arlington schools. He was a U.S. Marines veteran, serving six years, including during the evacuation in Vietnam.

He was married to Cheryl-lyn Cummings in Shaftsbury on April 25, 1981. Pat had worked in construction throughout his life and, for the past few years, at Stratton Mountain as a carpenter. He was a member of American Legion Post 69 of Arlington, he loved the out of doors, in particular hunting, ice fishing and fishing with his sons.

He liked to take the family camping up on Kelly Stand and tend to his garden. Pat was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan and was also a fan of the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots; he especially enjoyed watching them win two Super Bowls. He will be remembered as a fun-loving family man.

He leaves his wife, Cheryl-lyn Cross of Arlington; his sons, Joseph King serving with the USMC in Japan, Patrick Cross Jr., David Cross and Eric Cross all of Arlington; his daughters, Elizabeth King of Bennington and Toni Cross of New York; his brothers, Harold Cross of Arlington, George Cross and Raymond Cross both of Chelsea, Mass., Edward Cross of Arlington, Bernard Cross of Manchester and Anthony Cross of Manchester, N.H.; his sisters, Judy Sherman of Sunderland, Bernice Gaudette of Arlington, Mary McKeighan of Shaftsbury, Claudia Christman of Sunderland, Diane Jennings of Arlington and Sharon Allaire of Arlington; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Cross.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 28, at 2 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Truscott, interim pastor of the Federated Church of East Arlington, officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home immediately following the services by members of Post 69. A time of fellowship and refreshment will take place at the American Legion hall following the services; potluck dishes may be taken directly to the hall on Friday. Friends are invited to call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Route 7A, Arlington on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present. Should friends desire, gifts in memory of Patrick M. Cross may be made to either the American Heart Association or the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center Patient Resource Fund in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.
