1936 - 2016 BENNINGTON Patrick John Murphy, age 79, a long time resident of Bennington, VT passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016. Patrick "Murph" was born May 23rd, 1936 in Bennington, VT to Thomas & Lillian (Kelson) Murphy and was the 11th child of 13 children. After graduating from Bennington High School he served in the United States Army 3rd Armored Division stationed out of Fort Knox, KY and was later stationed in Germany during the years 1955-1958. He was later called back for service during the Berlin Crisis and served between 1961 and 1962. Mr. Murphy married Arlene G. Alderman of Berlin, NY on September 24th, 1960. Patrick was employed at the Columbia Box Corporation in Walloomsac, NY for 33 years and retired in 1995. Pat enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, fishing, and his love for big brass bands. He was a loyal fan of the Bennington Battle Day Parade and loved listening to all the marching bands. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage as his family always knew and heard "You better wear green on St. Patrick's Day". Pat was known for his great sense of humor and his family and friends will miss all his jokes and funny stories. During his retirement years, one of his greatest joys was being a taxi driver for his grandchildren. His grandchildren affectionately referred to him as "Papa" and they will cherish memories of him forever. Patrick was a long time member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington, VT as well as St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington, VT. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 69. Patrick is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Arlene Murphy. His three daughters: Kathryn and husband, Craig Weaver of Shaftsbury, VT, Nancy and husband, Kelly Haynes of Hoosick Falls, NY, Patty Gibbons & fiance', Kevin Hyde of Eagle Bridge, NY. Two sons: Kevin Murphy and wife, Katie of Arlington, VT and Leo Murphy of Burbank, CA. His 15 grandchildren: Miles Weaver and his wife, Jillian and Marybeth Weaver, Kelsey, Skye, Ben, Sam, Shae and Quinn Haynes, Jessa, Jade and Jennifer Gibbons, Jake, Maggie, Erin and Patrick Murphy. His two great-grandchildren: Hadley and Haiden Weaver. His five sisters: Mary Frances Murphy, Olga Dunn and Joan Douglass of Bennington, VT, Lena Senecal of Young Harris, GA and Barbara Molloy of Arlington, VT. Patrick was predeceased by three brothers: Thomas, Joseph and Leo Murphy. His four sisters: Margaret McGuire, Catherine Murphy, Ann Flood & Agnes Knowles. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, January 30th, 2016 at 9:30 to 10:45a.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, January 30th 11:30a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. Burial will take place in the spring in the family plot at the Old Bennington Catholic Cemetery.
