Paul M. Crane 1916-2011 NORTH BENNINGTON Paul M. Crane, 95, a longtime resident of George Street, North Bennington died Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington following a brief illness. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., January 19, 1916, he was the eldest child of the late Leslie M. and Cora B. (Gano) Crane. He received his education in Rye, N.Y., and was a 1934 graduate of Rye High School. He later attended the American Institute of Banking in New York City and was employed by the Bank of New York at their Madison Avenue office for ten years. Paul married Dorothy Evelyn Cyr October 10, 1942 in Bennington, having already enlisted in the U. S. Navy as the United States entered World War II. Paul taught Storekeepers class at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, and in October, 1944, shipped out to Pearl Harbor where he spent the next year. Following his discharge Paul returned to his position at the bank in New York until 1946 when he came to the former First National Bank of North Bennington, later Catamount National Bank, as a cashier. He retired from the bank (now Merchants Bank) on February 1, 1978 as vice president. Shortly after coming to Bennington he and Dorothy had an opportunity to move to North Bennington, as live-in caretakers for Edward Phillips whose wife had recently passed away. They initially agreed to stay with him one winter. Seven years later, in 1955, they built and moved to their current home on George Street. Paul and Dorothy were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington and later the Federated Church in East Arlington. Over the years Paul held the position of treasurer at the Methodist Church, the Village of North Bennington, McCullough Library and Paran Recreations. In retirement Paul was an avid tennis player, ice skater, cross country skier, golfer and traveler. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Crane of North Bennington; a daughter, Judy L. Crane of Northampton, Mass.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey M. and Eileen Crane of Buffalo, N.Y.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Rebecca (Jacob) Mercatoris and Daniel (Josselyn) Crane, all of Pittsburgh, Penn., and two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Paul was preceded in death by his brother, John M. "Jack" Crane and his sister, Olive Elmore.
