Paul H. Cross

1917 - 2013 SHAFTSBURY Paul H. Cross, 95, a resident of Cider Mill Road, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Paul was born in Shaftsbury Nov. 18, 1917, son of Willie and Mae Arbella (Harrington) Cross. He received his education at the Maple Hill School in Shaftsbury.

Paul married the former Phyllis Hoisington on Dec. 31, 1940, in Shaftsbury. Mrs. Cross died Nov. 18, 2004.

Paul was a cabinet maker by trade and a highly respected and well-known wood carver.

A longtime member of Red Mountain Lodge # 63 F & AM in Arlington, he was also a member of the Southern Vermont Arts Center, The Chaffee Art Gallery in Rutland, Green Mountain Wood Carvers, the National Wood Carvers Association and the National Rifle Association.

Paul also played the fiddle in the "Kelly Stand Symphony" in Sunderland.

Survivors include his adopted daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Jay Burdick of Shaftsbury; their sons, Zach Burdick and his wife, Jamie, of Georgia, VT., and Dakota Burdick of Shaftsbury; his caregiver, Bea Brown of Shaftsbury; his best friend, Steve Dalton; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his loving cats, Stir-Fry, Ralph Walker, O'Bama, Oscar and Elvira.

Paul was predeceased by his in-laws, Shirley Mc Ternan, Doris Chase, William, Paul and John Hoisington.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday, March 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Kenneth Coonradt officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Should friends desire, contributions in Paul H. Cross' memory may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of Red Mountain Chapter #63, F & AM, are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday at 3 p.m. to conduct services in memory of Paul Cross.
