ARLINGTON -- Paul Daniel Wade, 80, a resident of the Old West Road in Arlington, died Monday morning, May 3, 2004, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Mr. Wade was born on June 24, 1923 in Pawlet, the son of Daniel and Alta (Hart) Wade. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater in the Headquarters Battery 734th Field Artillery Battalion. On June 4, 1949 Mr. Wade married Rosalie Hayes in Arlington.

In his early years, Mr. Wade owned and operated the Texaco station in Arlington. He later worked as a mechanic for various area businesses and finally returned to operating his own repair business until his retirement in the mid-1980s. Mr. Wade was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Arlington and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Bennington. He was also a life member of American Legion Post #69 in Arlington and the Harned-Fowler Post, VFW in Manchester. Mr. Wade especially enjoyed his family and was a loving father to all of his children.

In addition to his wife Rosalie (Hayes) Wade of Arlington, Mr. Wade is survived by his children, Shelia Hoyt of Arlington, William Wade of Bennington, Paula Shortle of Rutland, Brenda Nicholson of Arlington, James Wade of Brandon, Anita Roy of Londonderry, N.H., Matthew Wade of Hopkinton, Mass., Mark Wade of San Antonio, Texas and Donna Savage of Londonderry, N.H.; four sisters, Elizabeth Fenno of Manchester, Mildred Woodcock of South Dorset, Janice Washburn of Brattleboro and Linda Giles of Troy, N.H.; 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Wade was predeceased by a grandson, Michael E. “MJ” Nicholson, and a sister, Hazel Hastings.

The liturgy of Christian burial for Mr. Wade will be celebrated on Thursday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Arlington with the Rev. George H. Dupuis, pastor, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the family lot at St. Columban’s Cemetery in Arlington. Friends are invited to call at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Should friends desire, gifts in Mr. Wade’s memory may be made to the Arlington Rescue Squad or the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging in care of Hanson-Walbridge, P.O.
