Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Paul M. Clermont, 84, a longtime resident of Bennington, died Sunday morning, Aug. 3, 2003 following several years of declining health.

Mr. Clermont was born in New York City on May 2, 1919 and was raised in Yonkers, N.Y.; he was the son of John and Rose (Smith) Clermont.

He and his first wife Rose toured New England on their honeymoon, falling in love with Vermont. They first settled in Fair Haven and moved to Bennington in 1948. He worked for many years as a tool and die maker at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, N.Y. and had served as the town of Bennington’s first official building inspector. Among the many projects he oversaw during his tenure as building inspector was the construction of Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center on Blackberry Lane, where he resided at the time of his death.

Their warm and dedicated staff made his final years as comfortable as they could be. He had been an enthusiastic Boy Scout leader for a number of years. His first wife the former Rose Betchel of New York City died in 1984. He later married the former Claire Galligan Aschenbach of Florida. She died in 2002.

Mr. Clermont is survived by his son, Paul Clermont, of New York City; his grandsons Stephen of Washington, D.C. and Jonathan of Kennebunkport, Maine; and a brother, William Clermont of St. Lucie West, Fla.; nieces, nephews and cousins. A service of remembrance will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. For directions or to send condolences please consult www.nsm.org/covey.
