Obituary Condolences

LUDLOW -- Paul Raftery, 95, a resident of the Gill Odd Fellows Home, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, following a long illness.

He was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on Jan. 11, 1908 and was the son of Timothy E. and Mary (Bransfield) Raftery. Mr. Raftery attended the schools in Elizabeth and was a graduate of the Seton Hall University; he later attended law school.

He worked for many years in the mayor’s office in Chicago and worked under Mayor Richard Dailey during his tenure. Mr. Raftery enjoyed reading and writing poetry. He was very good at writing verse and had submitted work to the Saturday Evening Post. He has also lived in Rutland and Arlington for many years after retiring to Vermont.

Mr. Raftery is survived by his close friends, Martha Quinlan and Carolyn Gauthier, both of Ludlow. He is predeceased by one cousin, Msgr. Walter G. Jarvais.

A prayer service will be offered on Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Arlington Chapel, followed by a mass of Christian Death and Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Church with the Rev. George Dupuis, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Columban’s Cemetery in Arlington. There are no calling hours scheduled.
