Perry E. Mattison

1949 - 2013 POWNAL, VT. Perry E. Mattison, 63, a resident of Barber Pond Road, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

The youngest child of Ralph and Mildred (Crosier) Mattison, he was born in Bennington on Aug. 26, 1949. He grew up in the family homestead in Pownal attending local schools. He graduated from Mt. Anthony Union High School, Class of 1968.

Perry served in the US Army from 1969 to 1975, where he received extensive training in heavy equipment operation and repair.

As a young man, he had worked for Burton Peckham on his farm in Pownal, where they became lifelong friends. For the past 35 years, he had worked as a heavy equipment hauler and operator for J.H. Maxymillian Construction where he was responsible for transporting the company's largest equipment throughout the Northeast. A hard working man, he took his work and providing for his family very seriously often putting in extra hours to finish a job.

Perry was a former member of the East Pownal Fire Department and a member of American Legion Post 90.

In earlier years, he had enjoyed hunting. He also liked NASCAR racing, Country music and maintaining the family homestead, often taking walks to the home with his faithful Labrador, Nikki.

He leaves his wife, Linda (Sheridan) Mattison, whom he married Sept. 25, 1976, at Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; daughters, Katie and husband, Chuck Keir of Brattleboro and Kristen Mattison and fiance, Justus Cameron of North Clarendon; brother, Clarence "Connie" Mattison of Florida; sisters, Jannette Bishop of Pownal and April Knapp and her husband, Bob, of East Pownal, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by a brother, Chester Mattison; by a sister, Lenora Beals, and by close brothers-in-law, Lenny Sheridan, Billy Sheridan, Ralph Bishop and Harry Beals.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held Monday Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in the family lot in Towslee Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.
