Obituary Condolences

CHARLESTOWN, N.H. -- Peter Alan St. Martin, 50, of Summer Street in Charlestown, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at the Springfield Hospital in Springfield, Vt., surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on July 13, 1954 at the Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, the second of three sons born to Arthur and Pauline (Lewis) St. Martin.

Peter, a Stevens High School graduate of the class of 1972, also attended Northeastern University, where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Pi fraternity and stood as a civil engineering degree candidate. While in high school, he scored in the top 10 percent nationally for the JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Search Test), and excelled in many extracurricular sports, including track and field, downhill skiing and ski jumping.

Peter worked in several fields throughout his lifetime, including concrete plant inspection, engineering, and general sales. For the past 12 years he has acted in the capacity as president and salesman for Freedom Publications, the largest independent phone book publisher in the state of Vermont. In addition to being president, Peter was also a co-owner and founder of Freedom Publications. He excelled in all aspects of what could surely be considered his true sales calling, before retiring in 2002.

An active member of the community, Peter served a number of organizations with dedication and ingenuity. He is a former member of the Charlestown Economic Development Association, St. Catherine’s Parish Council, Charlestown Rotary Club, and the Knights of Columbus.

Peter has been an avid outdoorsman, skier, sports enthusiast and devoted purveyor of World War II books and memorabilia. A loving husband and father, and cornerstone of the community, his interest and talents were widely shared and known throughout his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Laura; three children, Katherine, James and Elizabeth St. Martin of Charlestown; his parents, Arthur and Pauline St. Martin of Charlestown; four aunts, Toni Jardin and Theresa Neal of Winter Springs, Fla., Zora St. Martin of Newport and June Gates of Drumore, Pa.; two brothers, David St. Martin and his wife Gail of Evans, Ga. and James St. Martin and his wife Joyce of Claremont; his father and mother-law, Ernest and Marion Matt of Marlboro, Vt. and many cousins, sisters-and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday morning, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church with the Rev. Father Michael Gendron, pastor, officiating.

Graveside committal services will be held at a later date in St. Mary Cemetery in Claremont.

The Stringer Funeral Home, 146 Broad St., Claremont is in charge of arrangements.
