Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Peter D. Barringer, 56, a resident of Barbers Pond Road, Pownal, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at the Albany, N.Y. Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Norwalk, Conn. Nov. 26, 1946, he was the son of the late John and Claire (Sweet) Barringer. He received his education in the Wilton schools and was a 1964 graduate of Wilton High School.

Mr. Barringer was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era. He enlisted Jan. 4, 1966 and was honorably discharged May 27, 1969. During that time he was stationed in both Saigon and at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

Mr. Barringer married the former Deniese Daugherty on April 13, 1990 in Bennington.

Prior to his illness he had been employed at various restaurants and clubs as a bartender. He was a member of American Legion Post 90 in Pownal and VFW Post 1332 in Bennington.

An avid reader, he also enjoyed his devoted dog Casey. He also enjoyed all types of sports and was a fan of the New York Yankees.

Survivors include his wife, Deniese Barringer of Pownal; two step-sons, William Joly II and Heather Houghtaling of Pownal and Richie and Sara Joly of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Beth Ann Toner of Langdon, N.H.; a brother, Richard T. Barringer of Wilton, Conn.; three grandchildren, Kendall, Alyssa and William; his in-laws, Eugene and Phyllis Daugherty of Pennsylvania; a brother-in-law, Eugene Daugherty and his wife Susan of Pownal, a sister-in-law Tracy Dorman and her husband Jeffrey of Pownal, a sister-in-law Marlene Boyd and her husband Richard of Waldoboro, Maine; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday, July 26, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Foster, Chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Contributions in Peter Barringer’s memory may be made to the Jane Freely House in Jamestown, N.Y. through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of Pownal American Legion Post 90 are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. to conduct services in memory of Peter D. Barringer.
