Obituary Condolences

ARLINGTON -- The liturgy of Christian death and burial for Deacon Peter F. Putis was celebrated from St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Manchester on Wednesday morning. The Mass was concelebrated by church pastor the Rev. John Whalen, the Rev. Bernard Gaudreau and Deacon Paul Mello. At the entrance of the church, the pall was placed upon Mr. Putis’ casket by his wife, Patricia and children Robert and Erica. Patricia placed a bronze crucifix and Robert placed his father’s Bible on the pall. The processional was led by priests and deacons representing parishes from throughout the state of Vermont. The crucifer was Walter Butler, the acolytes were Kenneth Lenehan and Joseph Gioloti. The first reading from Ecclesiastes was read by Helen Mello, the responsorial was sung by Michael Gallagher, the second reading from Corinthians 4 was read by Gail O’Brien. Deacon Mello read from the Gospel of John, during the homily he touched on many aspects of his friend’s life including his devotion to his family, faith and his love of the out of doors. The prayer of the faithful was recited by Linda Previtti.

The gifts were presented to the altar by Robert and Erica, the communion hymn, sung by soloist Michael Gallagher, who also led St. Paul’s Church choir in offering several hymns including “Be Not Afraid,” Shepherd Me, O God,” “Song of Farewell” and “On Eagles Wings.” Personal condolences and memories were offered by the Rev. Whalen and the Rev. Gaudreau, director of the Deaconess community of Vermont. The Mass concluded with the clergy singing “ Salve Regina” in Latin. Burial followed in the Putis lot in St. Columban’s Cemetery in Arlington where the Rev. Whalen offered the committal prayers. The mercy meal was held at St. Paul’s parish hall following the committal services. A prayer service preceded the funeral Mass at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with Deacon David O’Brien of St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington officiating.

Serving as bearers were Michael Keough, Mark Robinson, Burr Snow, Durrell Johnson, William Jacques and Hal Crane.

On Tuesday evening the vigil service was held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Whalen officiating, Hugh Galvin, grand knight of Manchester council Knights of Columbus read and presented a proclamation to Mrs. Putis in honor of her husband’s membership in the K of C.

Mr. Putis, 61, a resident of Dunlap Farm Road and deacon of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church died unexpectedly April 23 at the Albany Medical Center.

Arrangements were under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
