Peter S. McCabe 1934-2010 ARLINGTON Peter Sheldon McCabe died Sunday, September 5, 2010, surrounded by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth (Betty) McCabe, and his three daughters Beth (Jeff) Schwarm of Bolingbrook, Ill.; Ellen (Steve) Hernberger of Cape Cod, Mass., and Kathryn (Doug) Stamps of St. Charles, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Carolyn Sue. Peter was born in 1934 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. His family moved to the U.S. in 1945 and settled in Arlington, Vt. His parents fostered his strong ethics and love for music and science. Peter attended the Arlington schools, graduating from high school in 1952. He graduated from Trinity College in 1956 and earned an electrical engineering degree from Rensalear Polytechnic Institute. He began his professional career at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. In October 1966, he was transferred to Midwest division and settled with his family in Wheaton, Ill. Peter was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton for 44 years. Throughout his life, he was active in many lay ministries including as a Vestry member, PADS homeless shelter, Advent House transitional living program, and the nursing home ministry. Peter was instrumental in growing the Wheaton Christmas Sharing Program, which remained dear to his heart until his death. He was the first lay director of the DuPage County CASA program as well as serving in Prison Ministry from 1982-2000. In addition, Peter's 38 year involvement in the Cursillo program brought him great joy and friendships. Peter was a skilled pilot, and his daughters remember their father flying them from their home in Illinois to New England for visits. He was a HAM radio enthusiast and enjoyed playing the acoustic guitar. Peter was a true renaissance man who touched all who knew him. He was the gentlest of men who lived a deeply spiritual life and truly believed in the goodness of all people. No one who knew Peter will forget his kindness, compassion, and thoughtfulness. Peter will be dearly missed by many friends and by those whose lives were touched and changed by him. Besides his wife and daughters, Peter is survived by his sister, Patricia Perkins, of Middlebury, Vt.; his brother, James McCabe, of Arlington, Vt.; his brother-in-law, Same Stone; grandchildren Patrick, Eric, and Jacob; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's memory to Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton, Ill., or to the Wheaton Christmas Sharing program.
