Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Philip G. Vance, 75, a resident of Morgan Street, Bennington, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass. as a result of a recent injury.

Born in Lowell, Mass. Feb. 28, 1929, he was the son of the late Hugh H. and Ethel (Cowdray) Vance. Phil received his early education in the Lowell schools and later moved to Bennington where he was a 1946 graduate of the former Bennington High School.

Phil married the former Joan “Twink” Toomey in Bennington on Oct. 21, 1950. Mrs. Vance died Jan. 15, 1987.

In earlier years, Phil was employed at the former Bennington Bookstore. He later worked at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury for 38 years until his retirement in 1988. Following retirement, he worked part-time for Tri State Maintenance company.

For many years Phil was a member of the Stark Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department. He was also a member of Bennington Elks Lodge 567 and a former member of the Hale Mountain Fish and Game Club.

An avid outdoorsman, while he enjoyed hunting, his main interest remained his home and family.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, KathrynVance, Lynne Vance and Sandra Vance-Sidella and her husband Alan, all of Bennington; a sister, Olive Vance Harrington of Bennington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, Phil was predeceased by a brother, Everett Vance.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard McSherry, pastor of United Methodist Church in Phoenicia, N.Y., officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Private committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Should friends desire, contributions in Philip G. Vance’s memory may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Green Mountain Chapter, American Red Cross through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

Members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday to conduct services in memory of Philip Vance: Bennington High School Class of 1946 at 4 p.m., Bennington Elks Lodge 567 at 5 p.m. and Bennington Fire Department at 5:30 p.m.
