Phillip Arthur Dorman

EAST POWNAL -- Mr. Phillip Arthur Dorman, 73, husband of Joan A. Dorman, and a resident of South Stream Road, and most recently of the Vermont Veterans Home, died on Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005.

Born in Bennington, Feb. 10, 1931, he was the son of the late Phillip I. and Doris (Dupee) Dorman. He received his education in Pownal and Bennington schools. Mr. Dorman joined the Navy in 1952 and served until 1960. His duties took him to China, Cuba, Kuwait, Italy and he was stationed in Rhode Island.

Mr. Dorman had been employed at Benmont Paper Co. in Bennington for many years and before retiring he had been employed at UST in Bennington as a machine operator. He retired in 1996.

Mr. Dorman enjoyed collecting cast-iron frying pans, making horseradish, cooking, traveling and, in earlier years, woodworking. He was a member of the VFW Post 1332 of Bennington, and the American Legion Post 13 of Bennington.

He leaves his wife, the former Joan Bourgeois; his children, Phillip T. and wife Theresa of East Pownal, his daughter Sheila and son-in-law Stanley Lawrence II of Stamford, his daughter Phyllis and her husband Greg Rafus of Cambridge, N.Y., his son Edward and his wife Gail Dorman of Rutland; he also leaves his stepchildren, his stepson David and his wife Lillian Hurley of Knoxville, Tenn., a stepdaughter Donna (Hurley) Wooley of Chewelah, Wash., a stepson Wilfred and his wife Virginia Hurley of Bennington, a stepdaughter Gertrude and her husband Samuel Hulbert of Weybridge, his stepdaughter Yvonne and her husband Kevin Clark of Middlebury, and Jo-Ann Hurley and her friend Dave Conklin of Bennington; his sisters and brothers, Violet Dufresne of Williamstown, Mass., Luella Crawford of Pownal, Doris Davis and her husband Albert of Washington County, N.Y., Virginia Dorman of Bennington and Donald and Linda Dorman; many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, cousins, 14 grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and 23 step-great grandchildren and uncles.

Mr. Dorman is predeceased by his first wife, the former Alberta Rose Tift Dorman, his parents and his brother and sister-in-law Phillip I. and Doris Dorman; his sister Cecil Dorman; two stepchildren, Paul and Kenneth Hurley Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Feb. 11, at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Canon Robert Miner, interim pastor of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
