Phoebe Georgina "Jean" Fielding

1925-2013 MANCHESTER CENTER Phoebe Georgina "Jean" Fielding, 87, a resident of Peace Street in Manchester Center, passed away peacefully January 30, 2013 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born in Waltham, Mas., on July 5, 1925 the daughter of James S. Smith and Edith C. Crooks. She received her education in Wayland, Mass., schools, graduating from Wayland High School, class of 1944. In her earlier years Jean worked as a waitress for many area restaurants and Inns and also worked for Combination Cash and Manchester Wood Craft.

Jean was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Manchester. She was on the Diaconate Committee several times, she taught Sunday school, she was a member of the Interfaith Council with other churches, was a member of the Mary Martha Fellowship of the First Baptist Church and served on the Prudential Committee. She won the Grange Citizen of the year award for involvement in community activities. She was involved with the Senior Meals Program, and a Food Cupboard volunteer. Jean enjoyed senior bus trips, crafts, crossword puzzles, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She always kept very active. Along with her husband David, they ran Fielding Ice Land, a local skating rink from 1961-1970, and than as a roller skating rink for two years after. She was very hospitable and outgoing and was known for sending cards to people and call them when they weren't feeling well. She was so proud of the fact that she finally received her driver's license at the age of fifty-six. She was known for taking pictures and her photos and was a devoted mother and her family was her main interest.

She is survived by her children Lynn D. Fielding of Sandgate, Lee S. Fielding and his wife Tammy of Shaftsbury, Bruce S. Fielding of Manchester and Darlene Holden of East Dorset, Vermont, four grandchildren Derek, Carson, Tyson and Stacy and two great grandchildren Savannah and Garrett. She was preceded in death by her husband David Lee Fielding who died July 4, 1980, her brother Everett Smith and her sister Laura Hudson.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Jean will be held Tuesday February 5, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Manchester. Rev. Steve Jewett will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in Factory Point Cemetery in Manchester. Visiting hours will be held Monday evening February 4, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brewster & Shea Funeral Service 34 Park Place Manchester Center, Vermont.
