SHAFTSBURY -- Mrs. Phyllis Hoisington Cross, 88, wife of Paul H. Cross, a resident of Cider Mill Road, Shaftsbury, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

Born in Windsor, July 9, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Ernest William and Hazel (Davis) Hoisington. She attended Windsor schools until her mother died when she lived with her grandparents for a few years until coming to Arlington to live with her father and step-mother, Ernest and Gloria Hoisington. She married Paul H. Cross in Shaftsbury Dec. 31, 1940 and they made their home on the Maple Hill family farm from that point forward.

Phyllis was a gourmet cook and homemaker and for many years was a household overseer to “summer people” in the Maple Hill area of Shaftsbury.

She was a member and Past Matron of the Red Mountain Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in Arlington for more than 50 years. She enjoyed many crafts including rug hooking and chair caning and, together with her husband, attended numerous craft shows throughout the state. She was an ardent admirer of birds and maintained feeders outside her window, nurtured flowers and always had a cat near at hand.

Survivors include her husband, Paul H. Cross of Shaftsbury; two sisters, Doris H. Chase and her husband Everett of White River Junction and Shirley H. McTernan of Sunderland; as well as six nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot at Maple Hill Cemetery, Shaftsbury.

Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Phyllis Cross’s memory may be made to Bennington Area Home Health through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of Red Mountain Chapter, Order of Eastern Star are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday at 4 p.m. to conduct services in memory of Phyllis Cross.
