BENNINGTON -- Phyllis M. McLaughlin, 68, a resident of Harwood Drive, Bennington, died on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Bennington following a long battle against cancer.

Born in Ipswich, Mass., July 1, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Catherine (Robitcheau) Carpenter. She received her education in the Ipswich schools.

In earlier years Phyllis resided in West Lafayette, Ohio, and was employed in the West Lafayette Schools in the kitchen and library. After moving to Bennington she worked as a secretary at Mount Anthony Union Middle School until her retirement in 2001. Following retirement she worked as a substitute teacher throughout the Southwestern Vermont Supervisory Union.

Phyllis was a member of both the Women of the Moose and Unit 13 American Legion Auxiliary in Bennington. She enjoyed working with children, dancing, gardening, reading, working on her computer and spending time at the beach. She had traveled throughout Europe on sightseeing trips.

Survivors include three children, Dawn McLaughlin, Catherine Elliott and Scott McLaughlin, all of Bennington; her grandchildren, William, Amy and Phyllis McLaughlin of Bennington, Brooke Bivins of Utica, N.Y., Ryan Elliott of Bennington and Andrew Elliott of Grand Forks, N.D.; her great-grandchildren, Gage, Benjamin, Emma, Julian, Kloi and Gracie all of Bennington, and Jonathan, and Alexander of Utica, N.Y; seven brothers and sisters, Barbara Guy of Hayward, Calif., Robert Carpenter of Portsmouth, N.H., Alfred Carpenter of Lynn, Mass., Donald Carpenter of Raleigh, Mass., Susan Doucette of Beverly, Mass., John Carpenter and Sharon Terreault, both of Gloucester, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Phyllis was predeceased by a granddaughter, Destiny Dawn and by five brothers and sisters, Benjamin Carpenter, Virginia Titus, Richard Carpenter, George Carpenter and Betty Clancy.

The funeral will be private and at the convenience of the family in Gloucester, Mass.
